The last time I got up on a Sunday morning for a JRC run, it was October 12th. I made it 14 miles before my ITBS flared up and I was finished. Since JRC was having its celebratory breakfast this morning, I really wanted to come out and run again.
Rule number 1 in recovery: Do not push yourself to come back too quickly. The funny thing about my ITBS ("funny") is that the pain and inflammation from where I was originally injured on the side of the knee is all gone. I can push on it and it doesn't hurt - hurray! Only now, maybe an inch or two towards the middle of my quad, I have a really nice bruise and a nasty knot underneath it. Sweet, right? During this entire recovery phase, I've had constant bruises all over my leg - including some nifty burn marks from where I iced too much. It's a good thing it's not shorts weather anymore.
Anyway, I decided to try to walk. I'll be honest with you - I have zero to little endurance in me. Since I don't know how to swim, I found myself unable to do most cardio after the injury. The elliptical hurt, the bike hurt, and don't even ask about the stairclimber. As the inflammation has gone away, I've been able to use the elliptical more, and walking doesn't hurt anymore.
It was great to be back at the store. Tapestry Park has been revamped for the holidays, with lights everywhere. I love Christmas lights (I even have them at my desk), so it was cool to see them everywhere. I should have taken more pictures, but I had my Flip Belt on and tried to leave my phone in there.
After walking about a half mile I felt good and wanted to try to run. I did a few short intervals (maybe 20-30 seconds a piece) for about .25 miles total. It didn't hurt, but I was not about to push myself any further. The last time I said "just going to run for a little" I went 2 miles and my IT band flared right back up. Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel is awesome, and I felt better than I have in a while. Hopefully I can improve and be back to actually running by the new year. Slow and steady, right?
To celebrate JRC being named as one of the Top 50 specialty running stores in the country, they hosted a little breakfast get together at the store this morning. I had put today as my goal date of being able to run again, but that didn't really happen (more on that in a future post). Still, I wasn't about to pass up free food and coffee from my favorite store.
It's a very well-deserved honor: I never would have made it as far in my marathon training without the help of JRC - they helped me with my shoes, gear, and their group runs gave me motivation to get my butt out of bed, especially on Sundays, to train. Now that I'm 2 runs away from earning my "elite" shirt (for 50 or more group runs), I'm even more motivated to heal up.
Back to the breakfast - we had a full spread: bagels, bananas, oranges, coffee, OJ, and even some champagne to make a mimosa. After 1/4 of a bagel (I have nothing to "carb load" for) and 3 cups of coffee (yikes), I headed home with some extra bananas - expect a banana bread recipe soon!
