When you're injured, one of the ways people tell you to stay "in touch" with the running community is to volunteer or cheer at races. I've volunteered at a lot of the Donna events in town, but I had never gone to a race just to cheer people on.
Every year, Jacksonville hosts the Gator Bowl, and 1st Place Sports does a 5K in honor of it. Since Iowa was playing in the game, fellow BibRave Pro Angie, as well as her friend Kelly, came to town and decided to do the race! I was really excited to finally meet Angie, and I think she was really excited to get some of my famous cookies!
Downtown Jax is a little funky to park in, so I got there as early as I could to secure my spot on the course. I was pretty much the only one out there, which isn't surprising for a 5K. Since the course was an out and back, I got to see Angie and Kelly right after they started and in the last .1 of the race. A lot more people gathered by the end of the race, and it was cool to be able to cheer for everyone. I do wish I had made a general cheer sign, since once Angie and Kelly passed by me it felt really awkward to just stand there.
Have you ever cheered someone on at a race? What's your favorite sign slogan to make?
