Things that are awesome: Fun drinks. Good times with friends. Tasty food from popular restaurants.
Things that are not awesome: Paying full price for anything.
Located in Jacksonville's 5 Points neighborhood, Black Sheep is famous for its strong cocktails, delicious food, and this place - the rooftop bar!
I've heard of Black Sheep before, but I had never gone there. Even though I've been to Five Points, I always stuck to the places I know - Hawkers, Brew, etc. I tend to shy away from going to new restaurants, because I guess like most people, I don't want to spend money somewhere where I'm not sure if I'll be satisfied. I also feel weird eating at a restaurant by myself. But, some of my friends wanted to make a day of it. What better way to enjoy something new than with some pretty awesome people?
First thing's first: Black Sheep's Happy Hour takes place daily from 3-6 PM, and on Sundays from 3-close. You can enjoy a bunch of their famous original cocktails for just $6 each, as well as a variety of spirits and beers. As seen on the menu above, there are also snack plates of their bar favorites.
We stuck around for a while and had a bunch of delicious cocktails. Our server, Nick, was awesome. He had many recommendations and made sure we were taken care of the entire time. As for the drinks, $6 each is a really good deal - back in New York, these types of drinks run you $13-$15 at a bar. Gross.
I ordered the Old Bay chips with Point Reyes Fondue. I'm not fancy enough to tell you what "Point Reyes Fondue" is - but it tasted like gorgonzola, which is basically the best cheese ever.
NOT on my list? Exploring the full dinner menu here. Black Sheep serves up locally sourced Southern food. Unfortunately for (cheap) people like me, their full menu is a bit on the pricey side. But, since we were already here, several of us decided to feast on their chicken dinner. It was $30, but had more than enough food for 2 people: fried chicken, amazing mashed potatoes, rice and black eyed peas, green bean casserole, and biscuits. My friend David and I split a dinner, and we were both stuffed by the time we forced ourselves to finish everything.
So, is Black Sheep's Happy Hour worthy of the "you HAVE to try this!" tag? I'd say definitely. The drinks are strong and affordable, the food is amazing, and the atmosphere is perfect. Despite its stellar reputation and potentially high price points, Black Sheep is casual enough for a group. I'd recommend it, especially for your next Sunday Funday!
