Moe's. Chipotle. Taco Bell. Surely when it comes to Mexican food, we can do better, right?
Living on Long Island, I really don't remember there being too many places to go for really good Mexican takeout. In college we went to Moe's a few times (thanks for the free chips!) and Chipotle had just become a thing.
That all changed when I moved down to Jacksonville. During my first visit, my mom kept raving about this place called Tijuana Flats. We went there several times when I was in town for just a few days - I was hooked.
But again, we can do better - and we can do it with some local flavor.
During a down night, I went with my friend David to the new Burrito Gallery location in Riverside (more specifically, "Brooklyn Station"). Burrito Gallery has a main location downtown, the new spot in Riverside, and an "express" location in Jax Beach. My dad always raved about this place, so it was time to check it out.
The new spot is conveniently located on Riverside Avenue, right off of 95. It has a snazzy rooftop, but since it was cold (50s! The horror!), we opted to eat in the main dining room.
If you've never been to Burrito Gallery, ordering is like you would do at Panera - order at the counter, grab a number, take a seat, and wait. I got the steak burrito, David the carnitas. Burritos come in small and large, and we both opted for the small. Next time, I think I'll upgrade to the large for the sake of stuffing as much as possible into my stomach.
The verdict? It's good, if not slightly overrated. It may be because I'm not a huge "burrito connoisseur," but it didn't seem crazy amazing to me. But, it sure did hit the spot.
One of the awesome things about Jacksonville is that there are so many places to grab a great meal. Burrito Gallery is one of the hometown favorites, so it's definitely worth a check out. You may need to try a few things on the menu to find the perfect choice for your tastes.
