After moving to Florida, one of the really cool things I realized was that there is a lot for runners. There are two big local running stores - 1st Place Sports and Jacksonville Running Company. Both of them sell shoes, apparel, accessories, gifts, and everything a runner/walker could want. One of the best parts about both of these stores is how easy they make it to run. There are group runs held most nights (Info on 1st Place Sports group runs here and JRC group runs here) and on the weekend, which make it easy to meet fellow runners and get motivated to do more races.
Speaking of races, there's one held in Jacksonville just about every weekend. While I can make an entire list of "races to run in Jacksonville," I'll just feature the must-do ones. The Jacksonville Bank Marathon is so popular that it was even recognized by Runner's World back in 2011 for its flat course, great weather, and small group size. It's also pretty affordable as far as races go - the half is as low as $45, and the full as low as $70. There's also a 5K option.
The weather in Jacksonville has been a little...random lately. Last weekend it was in the 80s, but with the new year came lower temperatures. It also rained. Hard. Running in the rain is actually really fun. It's way easier than dealing with the regular heat and humidity, and it always makes me feel like a badass.
To spare you the boring race recap, I finished. I've been working through ITBS (Google it, and never develop it yourself) for more than a year, so just finishing this race meant the world to me. I also got a pretty sweet medal. One of the coolest parts of this year's race was the huge field of elite runners - this race was one of the last chances for runners to qualify for the Olympics, so spectators got to watch some pretty speedy athletes in the half marathon.
Whether you've been running for years or you've never laced up a pair of sneakers before, you'll probably have fun at the Jax Bank Marathon/Half Marathon/5K. I definitely recommend it for any of your bucket lists!
