What a difference a year makes. This time last year, I was ready for the 26.2 with Donna half marathon. At the time, I was in the best shape of my life. I attended the RunDONNA meetup and it was a really easy 3 mile run in the humidity.
This year, I'm still coming back from injury. 3 miles is more than I've been able to run in a while. I'm not in very good shape, and I was ready to do the Donna 5K.
Despite all the setbacks, the Donna Social Shakeout is something I knew I couldn't miss. This year, the meetup was held at Lillie's Coffee Bar in Atlantic Beach. A group of runners joins the Donna ambassadors and Donna herself for a quick shakeout run through part of the marathon course. This year, we were joined by Joan Benoit Samuelson, Dave McGillivray (Race Director of THE BOSTON MARATHON!), and Jeff Galloway - an all star group that was an inspiration to run beside!
The media was even there! Donna did a live shot with one of the local TV stations. Here in Jacksonville, the 26.2 with Donna is a huge event, and the local support is amazing. During the race, the streets at the beaches are lined with people cheering.
The "easy 3" was really tough for me. I let myself walk whenever I wanted, but it was really a bummer to know that 3 miles isn't easy. I know I'm coming back from injury and I can't do what I used to be able to, but that doesn't make it any less difficult. One step at a time, right?
After the run, we came back to Lillie's and had coffee, water, and yummy muffins. I ended up grabbing a seat next to one of Jeff Galloway's coworkers, who I had a great chat with. He told me about how he suffered from IT band issues, and he gave me some advice. Before he left, he told me to kick butt in New York this fall.
