Note: I wrote a race review to cover logistics and stuff over on BibRave. This recap is about my actual experience running the race!
As a runner and a cupcake fan, it would have been ridiculous for me to miss a race called "The Cupcake Run." Benefiting Girls on the Run, a charity that helps empower girls through running and other physical activities, The Cupcake Run was held at the St. John's Town Center on April 11. I registered kind of late, mostly because I was still trying to decide if it was worth it with my IT band. If I'm paying for a race, I want to PR, or at least run as hard as I can. But, the promise of a free cupcake and cupcake medal lured me in, so I registered a few days before.
I was surprised to see so many runners! There were more than 1,000 of us. I met up with Jenn (the other Jenn!) from Runs With Pugs before the race. It was nice to see someone else that I knew, and I love how social media connected us. She ended up setting a huge PR too!
I'll write another post on this, but I recently switched my shoes to the ones that I had worn before I was injured. I've noticed that they have been making me feel better, so that's a huge plus. The problem is, these shoes are worn out, and I know I can't get away with wearing them for another round of marathon training.
Anyway, the course was two loops around the Town Center. If you live in Jacksonville, you know that means lots of...parking lots. Still, it was a flat course, and there is something oddly peaceful about running through a usually crowded area at 7:30 in the morning when no one is around.
The name of the game for me was to run it easy. My A goal was to finish with no pain in my IT band. Like most people, when I start to sprint, my form breaks - not something you need when you're on the way back from injury! I stopped only once to walk through a water stop, but I ran the rest. My finish time was right under 31:00 - slow (for me), but nowhere near as slow as I've been doing 5Ks, plus it was getting humid and the sun was coming up. Finishing without any pain almost made me cry, since it's been so long since I've been able to run without suffering!
As soon as I crossed the finish line, I got my cupcake medal and a yummy vanilla cupcake. I also got two coupons for free cupcakes at Sweet by Holly, so I'll be treating myself somewhere down the line!
I'm Jenn! I'm a baker, blogger, sorta-runner, and writer living in Jacksonville, Florida!
