Note: As a BibRave Pro, I received a shipment of all of these foods to review. While I received the foods for free, I was not compensated in any other way for this post. All opinions are my own!
No matter what you are training for, the right fuel is everything. Think of how terrible you feel trying to run after eating a burger or donuts (did someone say donuts?) compared to after eating toast or something light.
The amazing people over at Clif Bar sent me a package of LUNA Protein, little Clif Bars, and Clif Shot Bloks. Here's some of the key nutritional facts, plus my thoughts on the most important part - the taste!
CLIF Bar (100-110 calories; 17-18 carbs; 2-3 grams of fat; 4 grams of protein): The funny thing here is, I had never had a Clif Bar until I received a free one at work 3 days before I got this shipment! I loved it, and I was super excited to receive some mini bars (Chocolate Chip and White Chocolate Macadamia flavors) - each has around 100 calories, which is the perfect portion. If I'm going for a 3-4 mile run, I don't want to eat a full 200-calorie bar, since I can't bear to cut something in half and leave it. Both flavors are really good - not too sweet, and lots of oatmeal taste. I prefer the Chocolate Chip, but I think they taste very similar to each other, which is a good thing.
Luna Protein Bars (180 calories; 7 grams of fat; 21 carbs; 12 grams of protein): Wait, those aren't the same as the top picture! I was sent a box of Lemon Vanilla to try out. While I really liked the vanilla glaze (sweet and very vanilla without being overbearing), I'm not a big lemon fan. One of my fellow Pros, Heather (at Heather Runs Thirteen Point One), received a box of Chocolate Coconut Almond, but she doesn't like coconut. Us picky girls swapped our boxes. After wrestling mine away from mom (I let her have a few bars...) I tried one, and it was great. The coconut flavor isn't overwhelming, but you can taste it's there. If you like chocolate anything, you'll love these. A lot of protein bars have a really artificial chocolate flavor, but I didn't taste that in these. Each bar has 12 grams of protein, making them a good snack if you're hitting the gym after work.
Clif Shot Bloks (3 pieces = 100 calories, 24 carbs): We're going to get a little creative for this part of the post. Shot Bloks are energy chews, so they're meant to be eaten during your endurance activity. I couldn't fit them in my Fuel Belt during my last long run, so I figured I would try them before my next run. Of course, then I got hurt. While I can't vouch for how they are as a fuel, I did try one for the flavor aspect. I'm not a big berry fan, but I really like these. They're not too sweet, and they were easy to chew. I'll probably run well with these, but first I have to get back to running.
